WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

A potato and a smile
On a cold winter day in Norwich, England, a homeless woman approached a small jacket-potato van called Zaketpotatos, run by local vendor Zak Bevis. She was shivering, nervous, and almost too shy to ask for help—but finally gathered the courage to quietly request a jacket potato. Zak didn’t blink. He smiled, prepared a hot potato loaded with cheese and curry sauce, wrapped it carefully to keep the heat in, and then asked, “Do you need a drink?” before handing her a Coke at no charge. This isn’t a one-off gesture: Zak regularly gives food to the homeless, elderly, and vulnerable around Norwich. This is a reminder that kindness can be as simple as a hot meal and a gentle word.

Beyond a cup of coffee
In Laredo, Texas, the police department held its monthly Coffee with a Cop event at a local McDonald’s—a national program meant to help residents connect with officers in a relaxed, friendly setting. This month’s gathering had a festive purpose: attendees were invited to drop off toys for the department’s longtime Blue Santa Program, which, since 1980, provides Christmas gifts to children in need. The community showed up in force, donating what police called an “incredible number” of toys. Local singer-songwriter Hailyn Bella joined in, helping collect gifts and greeting families. A simple morning coffee became a moment of generosity, connection, and holiday cheer for Laredo’s kids.

Above and beyond for the hungry
In Manistee, Michigan, retired Marine Nate Rybicki started a “Start the Spark” fundraiser to support Blessings in a Backpack—a charity that provides weekend food to children who might otherwise go hungry. What began with a goal of $2,500 grew beyond expectation: the community has already donated more than $8,335. The generosity offers much more than meals—it’s a reminder that neighbors doing small acts together can help build safety nets for those who need them.
