WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

A surprise (no) party

At a First Watch restaurant in Naples, Florida, staff collectively decided to cancel their holiday party to give the money to their coworker Norman Vales, who is in the process of adopting a baby with his wife. The team had quietly decided the funds mattered more to his growing family than to a celebration. When the surprise was revealed, Norman broke down in tears as coworkers cheered. The moment went viral, and soon after, the company’s CEO stepped in to restore the holiday party budget and add extra support for the adoption. What began as a sacrifice became something bigger: a reminder that when people choose each other, everyone wins.

A one-armed hole-in-one

In Northamptonshire, England, Patrick Duke, a 67-year-old Irish golfer, achieved something extraordinary: his first-ever hole-in-one. But this one was different. Patrick lost his arm in a workplace accident in 2012 and later faced severe depression and PTSD. Golf, which he only began learning years later, became a lifeline. On a 120-yard par-3 at Overstone Park, he aimed straight for the flag with a seven iron, swung with one arm, and watched the ball land just past the hole, roll back, and drop in.

Dignity has no price

Behind his pizza shop in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, Chris Kolstad noticed something that wouldn’t leave him alone: people were digging through his dumpster for food. Instead of looking away, he wrote a simple message on Facebook asking them to stop—not because he was upset, but because, as he put it, “Nobody deserves that.” If someone was hungry, he told them, they could ask for a free pizza, or even leave a note so one could be left anonymously out back. The post spread quickly, inspiring neighbors and local businesses to help. Donations poured in, allowing Kolstad to feed nearly 100 people and support a nearby food shelf facing record demand. “I can’t sit in a building full of food and watch somebody starve in my parking lot,” he said—a reminder that kindness should never be optional.
