WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

📞 A unique phone call

On a college campus in Boston, a bright yellow payphone invites students to “Call a Boomer,” connecting them to a matching phone in a senior living community in Reno, Nevada. When someone picks up, they are linked to a stranger from another generation for a simple, real-time conversation. The project was created to help reduce loneliness, which affects both young adults and older people. The calls are unscripted and often brief, but they create meaningful moments of connection and understanding. In one conversation, a student and a senior shared advice and perspectives they wouldn’t normally hear in their daily lives. The result is a small but effective way to bring people together, showing that even simple ideas can help people feel less alone.

💰 More than money

At a small coffee shop in Warwick, Rhode Island, a co-owner named Michael Coyne discovered that about $20 had been taken from his tip jar while he was working. The loss mattered because he and his family rely on tips rather than regular pay, and the incident left him feeling hurt and confused. After sharing what happened in a short video, local residents began stopping by the shop to show support in person. Over the next few days, customers gave far more than what was taken, leaving over $1,400 in tips and offering kind words of encouragement. Many people were motivated by personal connection, including parents of children with similar challenges, and wanted to show respect for the work he was doing. Police also helped by providing a more secure tip jar, adding a practical response alongside the community’s support. In the end, the experience shifted from a small act of harm to a larger moment of care, showing how a community can respond when someone is treated unfairly.

🏞️ The courageous Boy Scout

On a summer rafting trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, a group of teen scouts encountered dangerous whitewater rapids when their scout leader fell from the raft. During a second fall, the leader’s foot became trapped, leaving his head underwater and putting him at serious risk of drowning. A 13-year-old scout, Devon Champenoy, quickly moved across the raft and freed the trapped foot, allowing others nearby to help complete the rescue. After the rescue, the leader was injured but alive, and Champenoy took over guiding the raft through the remaining stretch of rapids, keeping the group steady and focused. For his actions, Champenoy received the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, an award given fewer than 300 times in the history of the Boy Scouts.
