WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

Volleyball for all
At Woodland Cottages, a senior living community in Texas, residents have been meeting weekly with students from Lake Belton High School for games of chair volleyball. The idea began when the high school volleyball team visited to spend time with residents and decided to organize friendly matches that everyone could participate in. Seniors play from seated positions while students adjust the pace of the game, making it accessible and enjoyable for all. Over time, the weekly games have grown into real friendships, with players learning one another’s names and sharing stories beyond the court. The residents even attended the students’ school “Senior Night,” cheering from the stands and bringing small gifts to show their support. Both groups say the visits give them something steady to look forward to each week. The partnership shows how simple, consistent time together can reduce loneliness and build meaningful connections across generations.

43-day effort Reunites owner with dog
During a cross-country move in late December, Steven Maa stopped in Montezuma, Colorado, and left his dog, Rocky, with a local pet sitter while he went skiing. Startled by something, Rocky slipped out of his harness and ran into the nearby Rocky Mountains just as a snowstorm and freezing temperatures moved in. Volunteers from Summit Lost Pet Rescue launched a careful search using trail cameras, scent stations, and community alerts, but Rocky remained missing for more than six weeks. On February 9, a neighbor’s doorbell camera finally captured an image of a thin, wandering dog, giving the rescue team a new lead. Within hours, they safely trapped Rocky using familiar scents and food, and he was soon reunited with his owner. Though he had lost significant weight, Rocky was otherwise healthy and quickly returned to his affectionate personality. The story is a reminder of how persistence, teamwork, and care can make a meaningful difference, even in the most uncertain situations.

Snow heroes
After a series of heavy winter storms in Washington, D.C., local volunteers known as the “DC Snow Heroes” stepped in to help neighbors who couldn’t safely clear their own sidewalks and driveways. Organized through the city’s Serve DC volunteer program, the group focused on assisting elderly residents, people with disabilities, and families overwhelmed by deep snow and ice. Volunteers went door to door with shovels, carefully clearing paths to help residents safely leave their homes. For many neighbors, the simple act made daily tasks like getting to work, school, or medical appointments possible again. Residents expressed gratitude for the unexpected help and the sense of connection it created. The effort showed how small acts of service can strengthen community ties and provide meaningful support during challenging weather.
