WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

Father on call

Just after midnight on New Year’s Eve in Crans-Montana, a fire broke out at an underground nightclub, where more than 150 young people were celebrating. The blaze was likely sparked by fireworks or sparklers igniting the ceiling. By chance, Paolo Campolo—a 55-year-old father—was nearby because his daughter had stopped home earlier to say hello, delaying her arrival at the club. When she saw the flames, she immediately called him. Campolo rushed to the scene with a fire extinguisher, forced his way through a blocked exit, and helped rescue 10 people trapped inside. As emergency crews arrived, nearby bars opened their doors to treat the injured. Amid this tragedy, the night revealed something steady and real: ordinary people choosing to act courageously.

Dogs and Big Macs

On Christmas Eve at the KC Pet Project in Missouri, more than 200 shelter dogs were treated to McDonald’s hamburgers thanks to a local animal advocate who’s made it a yearly tradition. Staff described the moment as “pure joy” rippling through the kennels as tails wagged and pups enjoyed their special holiday feast, reminding everyone that kindness can brighten even the lives of animals waiting for forever homes

The manatee record

ZooTampa released a record 26 rehabilitated manatees back into the wild in 2025—the most in its history—highlighting its vital role in protecting a species increasingly threatened by boat strikes and habitat loss. Through its David Straz Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center, the largest nonprofit facility of its kind in the U.S., the zoo has now cared for more than 615 manatees since 1991, returning most safely to Florida waters. And in spring 2026, a new state-of-the-art rescue center will invite visitors to witness this life-saving work up close—offering hope, transparency, and a deeper connection to conservation in action.
