WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

Firefighters rescue dinner
In Washington state, three firefighters responded to a routine car accident involving an Instacart driver. The driver wasn’t hurt, but their vehicle had to be towed—leaving a customer’s groceries stranded. Rather than letting the delivery fall through, the firefighters loaded the bags into their rescue vehicle and delivered the groceries themselves. The department later called it “a small gesture that made a big difference,” a reminder that serving a community sometimes means going beyond the call—right to someone’s front door.

Cars for mothers
At Louisa County High School in Mineral, Virginia, automotive technology students do more than learn car repairs—they change lives. Several times each year, students refurbish donated vehicles and surprise single mothers with the keys, working alongside the nonprofit Giving Words. For one recipient, Jessica Rader, a reliable car meant moving from part-time to full-time work and keeping up with the demands of raising three kids.

From meme to meaning
In South Bend, Indiana, an elderly man named Mo Riles became an unlikely local spectacle because of his battered, barely-holding-together truck. Strangers joked. Photos spread online. But when local auto-detailer Colin Crowel saw the truck, he wondered what story sat behind the dents. Mo worked at a Dollar Tree, faced health challenges, and simply couldn’t afford a replacement—yet he showed up every day anyway. Colin started a GoFundMe, and within days more than 500 people raised over $26,000. Earlier this month, Mo drove his old truck one last time to a dealership and left with a newer Chevy, paid for by people who chose compassion over mockery. “This isn’t about me,” Mo said through tears. “It’s about a community coming together.”
