WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

From sweeping floors to sweeping dreams
At Walbridge Elementary in St. Louis, custodian George Love has spent years doing more than cleaning floors. Since 2017, he has quietly helped students chase their futures by funding college scholarships out of his own pocket. Even while earning less than $12 an hour and dealing with bills at home, Love drove for Lyft on the side so he could give $500 scholarships to high school seniors, enough to help buy a laptop for college. His goal was not to reward only top students, but to support hardworking young people who needed someone to believe in them. One of those students, Taj’Marie Lane, said Love became a guiding light in her life after the loss of her grandfather. Over seven years, Love has helped 107 students, proving that generosity can come from the most unexpected places.

Food banks and book banks
A literacy campaign in the United Kingdom recently raised about £50,000 ($58,085) to help expand access to books. The effort placed small “book banks” inside local food banks so families picking up groceries could also take home free novels and children’s books. Many of the books were donated by publishers, while volunteers organized reading sessions in schools and community centers. Hundreds of people also pledged to read with children or encourage daily reading at home. Organizers say the goal is to make books accessible to families who may not have extra money for them. Supporters believe combining food assistance with literacy resources can strengthen communities in simple but meaningful ways.

A creative way for dogs to find homes
A Pennsylvania animal shelter turned a viral internet trend into a real-life adoption event. The trend began with AI-generated videos that appeared to show dogs choosing their future owners from a group of people. Inspired by the idea, the shelter invited potential adopters to sit in a room while dogs were brought in to interact with them. Staff watched to see which people the dogs naturally approached or connected with. The event helped create relaxed, meaningful first meetings between dogs and potential families. Several of the dogs were adopted after forming clear bonds with the people in the room. The shelter hopes the creative event will help more rescue animals find homes.
