WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS
🙏 Hope in every hallway
Tyler Nichols, a 14-year-old from Indiana who is being treated for leukemia, found a way to stay connected to something he loves while spending time at Riley Hospital for Children. He had planned to run a half marathon, but because of his treatment, he was sidetracked. Instead of giving up, he completed the 13.1-mile distance by walking through the hospital hallways instead. Doctors, nurses, and hospital staff encouraged him along the route and celebrated each mile with him. The walk became more than a race goal — it gave him a chance to keep moving toward something important to him during a difficult period of life. He finished all 13.1 miles and reached the goal he had set for himself. His story shows how support from family and caregivers, along with personal determination, can help create meaningful moments even inside a hospital setting.
⚽️ More than teammates
For the past 15 years, the nonprofit organization Team IMPACT has been connecting children with serious illnesses and disabilities to college athletic teams across the United States. The program allows children to become official members of teams by joining practices, games, team dinners, and campus activities. Since it began in 2011, more than 4,500 children have been matched with teams at hundreds of colleges, creating friendships and support systems that often continue beyond sports. One example is Liam, a teenager with a rare genetic condition, who formed a close friendship with college hockey player Blake Mesenberg and his teammates. Liam’s family shared that these relationships gave him experiences and connections he had not previously had with a group of friends. The program also helps student-athletes learn empathy, leadership, and a broader understanding of the people around them, showing how consistent support and inclusion can shape lives on both sides
🏞️ A comeback in the wild
On Santa Catalina Island, a small native fox population once faced a serious decline after a canine distemper outbreak and other threats caused their numbers to drop sharply. Wildlife biologists and conservation groups stepped in with a recovery plan that included vaccinations, captive breeding, monitoring, and careful releases back into the wild. Teams spent years tracking the foxes and protecting them from future disease risks. Gradually, the population began to grow again, moving from a small number of surviving animals to thousands across the Channel Islands. The recovery became one of the fastest successful comebacks for a mammal protected under the Endangered Species Act. The story matters because it shows how steady, long-term work and cooperation can help restore a species that once seemed close to disappearing.
