ENCOURAGING STORIES

🦛 Saving Bumpy

In May 2026, wildlife rescuers in Naivasha, Kenya, found a days-old hippo named Bumpy beside his mother, who had died the day before. The Kenya Wildlife Service safely rescued him and brought him to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, where he was given warm milk, a blanket, and close care from his keepers. After a short stay at the nursery, Bumpy moved to the Trust’s Kaluku Unit along the Athi River, where he quickly became attached to the people caring for him. Now five months old, Bumpy spends his days swimming, playing, and resting beside his keepers. He has also formed friendships with other rescued animals, including Wangalla, a young orphaned elephant who treats him almost like a younger sibling. The sanctuary is caring for Bumpy as he grows, with the long-term goal of returning him to the wilds of the Tsavo region.

❤️ A Young Heart for Education

Bronx teenager Max Owobu was 15 when a summer visit to Ghana helped him see how financial hardship was keeping some children out of the classroom. While there, he met a boy named Matthew who was working instead of attending school because his family could not afford the costs of his education. Max decided to use money he had saved from his weekly allowance to help Matthew enroll in school, and that experience inspired him to create the Yenko Foundation. Through the nonprofit, Max began raising money to sponsor children at Calvary Methodist Elementary School in Accra, Ghana. The support helps cover expenses such as tuition, uniforms, transportation, meals, and school supplies, giving families help with the costs that can otherwise make attending school difficult. By age 18, Max’s efforts had helped 10 children attend school, and he was working toward sponsoring even more students through their primary education. What began as helping one child has grown into a practical effort to give more children the opportunity to learn, stay in school, and build toward their futures.
