“The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love and of generosity and of goodness. It illuminates the picture window of the soul, and we look out upon the world's busy life and become more interested in people than in things.”

-Thomas S. Monson

WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

Secret Santa changes lives

In eastern Idaho, a mysterious “Secret Santa” has been quietly giving back more than $1 million to families facing hardship. The anonymous donor has delivered cash and gifts to people in crisis—including a family with conjoined twins needing specialized care, a new mom who lost her home in an accident, and a beloved teacher displaced by fire. Each gift arrives as a surprise, providing tangible relief and emotional lift during the holiday season. This ongoing generosity turns financial chaos into moments of comfort and hope.

Christmas card love

In Swansea, Wales, Clare Jones, a mother told she has roughly 10 months to live, asked people to include her in their Christmas card lists. She wanted to share in their joy of the season. What started as one simple request exploded across social media: hundreds of cards arrived, filled with messages of love, show and movie tickets, camping vouchers, chocolates, and other heartfelt gifts. Clare said the outpouring of compassion has been overwhelming and uplifting in a difficult season. It’s a reminder that even small gestures can become a powerful expression of community support.

..all for a cat

Shadow, a black cat from Oklahoma City, went missing when his family stopped at Liard River Hot Springs in northern British Columbia during a road trip. He slipped out of the car and ran into the forest, and despite searching, his owner Jeremy Barton eventually had to return home without him. For five months, Barton and his two young sons had no idea what happened to their cat. Then two local residents, Christine Sutherland and Bruce Kosugi, found Shadow alive near the park. They took him into their care and drove him eight hours south to their home in Fort St. John so he would be safe. From there, Sutherland arranged for Shadow to be flown to Winnipeg, where Barton drove 16 hours from Oklahoma to meet him. Just before Christmas, Shadow was finally reunited with his family. Strangers went far out of their way—driving, coordinating flights, and caring for a lost pet—simply to help a family be whole again.
