WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

🚌 Students to the rescue

On a regular school day in Hancock County, Mississippi, a bus driver lost consciousness after suffering a sudden asthma attack while driving a full bus of students. As the bus began to drift, one student moved quickly to grab the steering wheel, while another pressed the brakes to slow it down. At the same time, three other students focused on helping the driver — one called 911, and two others supported her and located her medication. Working together, the five students were able to bring the bus to a safe stop and keep the situation under control until help arrived. The driver later recovered and expressed deep gratitude, saying their actions likely prevented serious harm. What stands out is how calmly and cooperatively the students responded, each taking on a clear role without being asked. Their quick thinking and teamwork made a difficult moment manageable and kept everyone safe.

👁️ Seen in a new light

Six-year-old Saffie Sandford was diagnosed with a rare inherited eye condition called Leber’s congenital amaurosis after her parents noticed she struggled to see in low light. Doctors explained that without treatment, her vision would continue to worsen and she could lose her sight completely by adulthood. At a children’s hospital, she received a one-time gene therapy that delivered a healthy copy of the faulty gene directly into each eye through a small injection. The treatment helped her eyes produce a protein needed for vision, and over time her ability to see — especially in the dark — began to improve. After the procedure, Saffie was able to do everyday things that had been difficult before, like moving around safely at night, playing, and participating more fully at school. Her case also adds to growing evidence that treating children early can strengthen visual pathways while the brain is still developing, which may improve long-term outcomes for others with similar conditions

🎂 A unique birthday cake

At a wildlife sanctuary in Cornwall, England, a Humboldt penguin named Spneb marked her 38th birthday with a small celebration organized by her keepers. They made her an ice cake topped with fish, which she and the other penguins gathered around and ate. Spneb is believed to be the oldest of her species in the world, far exceeding the usual lifespan for Humboldt penguins. She has lived at the sanctuary for decades and was originally named after a medical treatment that once helped save her life.
