WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS

❤️ A diploma received with love

At Milwaukee Lutheran High School in Wisconsin, graduating senior Kalen Barksdale thought he was simply walking across the stage to receive his diploma. Instead, school staff paused the ceremony and announced that his diploma was taking a little longer to arrive. Moments later, Kalen’s older sister, Specialist Barksdale of the Wisconsin National Guard, appeared carrying both his diploma and a bouquet of flowers after returning home from deployment. She told her brother that she would “cross the ocean a million times” for him and congratulated him on reaching this important milestone. Kalen, who had not seen his sister during his entire senior year, stepped off the stage and embraced her as the crowd cheered. The surprise reunion turned an already meaningful graduation day into a special family moment they will both remember for years to come.

💡 A simple idea for cleaner water

Three teenagers from India won the Global Earth Prize after creating a natural method to remove microplastics from water. Working on the problem of plastic pollution, they discovered that powder made from tamarind seeds could attract and bind tiny plastic particles. During testing, the powder was able to remove a large portion of microplastics from contaminated water in a simple and low-cost way. Their project stood out because tamarind seeds are widely available and often discarded as waste. The students hope their invention can help make water treatment more accessible, especially in communities with limited resources. Their success shows how young people can contribute practical solutions to environmental challenges.

🍔 A restaurant with purpose

In Louisville, Kentucky, a restaurant called Shirley Mae’s Café marked its first year in business by donating all profits above $100,000 to local nonprofit organizations. Owner, James Beard Award-winning chef Ashleigh Shanti, and her team built the restaurant with a commitment to supporting the community alongside serving food. After covering operating costs and employee wages, the café directed its excess earnings to groups working to help local residents. The donation provided meaningful financial support to organizations addressing needs in the Louisville area. Customers who chose to dine at the restaurant became part of that effort simply by supporting the business. The café’s first-year success shows how a local restaurant can create a positive impact beyond its dining room while remaining connected to the community it serves.
