WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS
📚 Library Dads
What began as a father’s weekly trips to the library with his young daughter in Atlanta turned into a meaningful community tradition. Khari Arnold invited other dads to join them after seeing how reading together strengthened his bond with his daughter and supported her early learning. Soon, fathers and their children were gathering regularly for story time, shared reading, and time to connect with one another. The group, now known as Library Dads, has created a welcoming space where families can enjoy books while building lasting friendships. The simple idea has encouraged more fathers to be actively involved in their children’s reading and has helped introduce many families to the resources their local libraries offer. It is a thoughtful reminder that small, consistent moments spent together can make a lasting difference for both children and parents.
😌 A Pantry Without Shame
In Michigan, a woman who once depended on food pantries herself is now helping families through small, free community pantries that are open to anyone in need. She stocks the shelves with groceries, personal care items, and household essentials, making sure people can take what they need without filling out paperwork or feeling embarrassed. Her goal is to create a welcoming place where neighbors are treated with dignity and kindness during difficult times. The pantries are supported by donations and volunteers who believe everyone deserves access to food without judgment. Families have been able to find help close to home while also seeing that their community cares about them. Her efforts show that simple acts of generosity can make everyday life a little easier and remind people they do not have to face hardship alone.
🛟 Diving In, To Save A Life
At 71 years old, Liu Defang was spending time with friends near a bridge in Suixi County, China, when she heard someone shout that a person had fallen into the river. Although she had only learned to swim after retiring, she immediately entered the water with a life preserver to help. She discovered the person was a man in his 30s, and despite his resistance, she stayed with him until they reached the shore, where others helped complete the rescue. After making sure he was safe, Liu quietly went home without telling her family because she did not want them to worry. When the rescue was later shared on social media, many people praised her calm courage and willingness to help a stranger. Her story is a reminder that learning a new skill at any stage of life can make a meaningful difference for someone else.
